Quandary: Pacing & Progress

Week 3

This week I set out to narrow down the Mediums that are available to express Aspects of the Subject I’ve been Exploring the Creative Process through – Birds!!!

This effort to Curate and Constrain my options introduced my first quandary in Exploring the Creative Process: how quickly should one move through the process and how can you tell if you are moving forward?

“Determining Pace in the Creative Process depends on how you define Progress and what Outcome you are seeking.”

Sorting through how to advance through the Creative Process for the first time

Pacing in the Creative Process

Working through the Creative Process produces Inflection Points, where you have to determine whether you are ready to pivot to the next phase in the process, or if you need to remain in the current phase longer to ensure that you are exploring the options sufficiently to produce the Outcome you are seeing.

This means that determining Pace in the Creative Process depends on how you define Progress and what Outcome you are seeking.

Defining Progress

As I walk through the Creative Process for the first time, I intend to define Progress aggressively because I want to work through the Process itself multiple times.

For this first trip through the Creative Process, I’d like to define Progress as advancing through the Phases of the Creative Process toward a Creative Product as swiftly as possible.

I have already had some success in the past 2 weeks working through the familiar medium of Photography, so I have used it as an entry-point into broader creative Concepts and Medium, which I also consider to be Progress and, frankly, I could consider a sufficient product to advance and iterate on the process.

What Outcome are you seeking?

For this first Exploration of the Creative Process, I want to advance quickly so that I encounter each of the Steps and Phases of the Process itself and establish a preliminary understanding of the Process as a whole that I can iterate upon over time.

That said, I am still seeking to look at disparate things and bring them together in new ways, which means going beyond exploring the Subject Birds through the Medium Photography.

This means that I’m not finished with my first walk through the Creative Process and I must still pick a Medium and Aspects of Birds that I want to try to bring together in a new way

Constraints

If I am going to advance through the Creative Process, I must now place Constraints on how I will work towards a Creative Product.

In the coming weeks, I will explore each of the Birds in our yard that I observe through a Creative Medium. Once I explore the Aspects of that Bird through a Medium, I cannot explore a later Bird through that same Medium.

I will stop exploring Birds when I have exhausted the Birds I observe in our Yard, or I achieve a truly Creative Product.

What next?

I will post next Monday on one of the Birds in our yard expressed through a Creative Medium. Once that Medium is used, I will have to think of a different one.

Please comment below if you have thoughts on a way to express Aspects of Birds through a Medium, or if you have thoughts about Pacing and Progress in the Creative Process.

I want to hear your ideas!

Otherwise, see you next week!

Birds are among my favorite wildlife to admire. So I really enjoyed your photography and am looking forward to hearing more about the creative process.
